Between the Lines

CAMPAIGN

The elections office is working with social media companies to tackle fake profiles that are attempting to carry on campaigning after the campaign period ends on Sunday at 12 pm. There needs to be more bite from the elections office to counter violations.

LAST MINUTE

There were several campaign meetings held in different constituencies to comply with the deadline. It looks like candidates are complying, then there will be some who will try and bend the rules.

TICKETS

The social media-based Samoan ‘news’ organisations will not risk coming to Samoa to cover the elections. After the charging of two social media bloggers, many ‘commentators’ have been forced to cancel their tickets.

POSTERS

Taxis and vehicles displaying posters of their favoured candidates must be taken off by 12 pm on Sunday. This is a violation of the Electoral Act, even if your intentions are good. Comply with the law.

ELECTION SUNDAY

A true election Sunday will be observed as most churches will hold a prayer for peace as we head to the polls. Just a reminder to the holy men that this does not permit preaching of political views from the pulpit. Please stay neutral.

DREAMS

Manu Samoa’s loss to Tonga is an indicator that the national team may not qualify for the Rugby World Cup. Fiji is up next in Hamilton, and things are only going to get difficult. RWC dreams will end if they lose to the Flying Fijians.
