Youth and experience overcome odds

A team mixing a young running talent with established veterans has claimed the Mixed Team title and been crowned the overall winner for last Saturday's Perimeter Relay Run.

Team Kraken-Phat Burger's runners, Bradley Myer, Cassidy Jackson-Carroll, Andrew Colquhoun, Dodianna Ale, Iwata Shoichi, and captain Peter Davies took the top spot in the Mix category after completing the 108 kilometere course in 9 hours 54 minutes and 8 seconds.

One of Team Kraken's veterans, Bradley Myer, told the Samoa Observer that weather was one of the event's most difficult challenges.

He said that when he began running his 18 kilometre portion of the course, it was pouring rain. A few minutes later the sun was shining and the heat was unbearable but he persisted in the face of difficulties:

"As I was running I could feel my legs hurt and cramps were starting to kick into my legs, and then the scorching heat was another challenge," he said.

"I pushed on and persevered because I wanted to complete [my leg] and make my teammates happy. This is my third year competing in the Samoa Perimeter Relay and I'm looking forward to next year's relay if I'm still healthy by then."

The team's youngest member, Dodianna Ale, said she was surprised to find her team had taken out the overall and mix team category.

"Hats off to my beloved team Kraken-Phat Burger for the wonderful [experience], we were sort of looked at as the underdogs in the perimeter run because our runners are seasoned and well past their primes," she said.

"But nevertheless we defeated the odds and beat the expectations of the other teams.

The team prepared months before the scheduled day of the Samoa Perimeter Relay, Ms. Ale said.

"We had running sessions held at Taumeasina Island Resort every evening at 5:00 pm, and I would go early in the morning by myself and jog from Vaitele to Tuanaimato," she said.

"It was hard sometimes to get up out of bed and go jogging but I guess if you will yourself to do it you can go through with whatever you're planning."
