Emmanuel sets new records
Teenage weightlifter Emmanuel Palota Ulimasao has concluded his competition in Lima, Peru, by setting three new Oceania records at the IWF Junior and Youth Championship.
The 18-year-old competed in the men's 96kg category. He is from Vaigaga and Pu'apu'a in Savaii, a gold medalist at the Oceania Championship in Melbourne last month.
"I feel relieved with what I have achieved. I never thought I could do that, but here I am doing it. I started weightlifting about two years ago. This would be my first international competition and I'm grateful for these achievements," he said from Peru.
"I have been training hard for this and it has certainly paid off. Every time I lift, I always keep in mind who I'm doing it for. Hopefully, we have done our country, our families, and sponsors proud."
Emmanuel is ranked 12th in his category. His snatch lift was 140kg and his clean and jerk 176kgs, his total was 316kgs. These are all records for the Oceania region. He placed third in Group B.
Seine Stowers also confirmed her next big tournament, the Mini Games in Palau next month.
"This is done, we will continue training when we get back, as we have to prepare for the Mini Games. This was my first international competition. It was nerve wrecking to be around the best lifters around the world, I am used to the Oceania region competitors so this is a huge step-up for me. It will definitely help my preparations for the Mini Games. We did it and we will get ready for the next one," she said.
