District chairs appointed, only two from opposition
Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt announced the appointments of district chairs on Wednesday and explained why only two chairmen are from the Human Rights Protection Party.
They are Lima Graeme Tualaulelei of Vaimauga No.4 and Tuia Paepae Letoa of Safata No.2.
Prime Minister La'aulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt explained that only these two HRPP members have supported the project, while the other four did not apply.
Moreover, eight other HRPP members have written to object to the project, and this is why they were not selected by the special panel that screened the candidates who have applied for the chairman post.
He said five other employees for each district council have also been appointed, and other employees, two from each village within the district, will be selected by the chairman and other committee members.
La'aulialemalietoa also revealed that there are four districts that have two chairmen because of some of the criteria that needed to be met.
The cabinet has also approved $4.2 million from the budget, under the unforeseen expenditures for the renovation of the roof of the courthouse in Mulinuu.
Laaulialemalieta said reports have revealed that there is an urgent need to renovate the courthouse, and this amount has been passed for such a plan in January.
He acknowledged the Chinese Government for donating $200,000 to begin renovations for the courthouse.
