Special vote missing from Salega 1

A scrutineer present during the final count for Salega 1 constituency claims that a special vote cast was missing when the ballot boxes were opened for the official count.

He said the special vote could not be found.

"The scrutineers were standing up during that time and questioned the Office of the Electoral Commission as to why this happened," he said.

"I stood up and told the OEC staff to let it go because this one special vote will never change the result of who the winning candidate is."

This man was one of the scrutineers for a candidate who was unsuccessful.

"If this one vote can change the result, I will fight for the OEC staff to answer why this special vote was not in the special vote ballot box," he said.

Salega 1 was one of the last three constituencies to be counted. FAST's Tilafono David Hunter secured the seat with 473 votes. Independent Falesii Aisa Autagavaia received 158 votes, with Selu Letoa Reupena Letoa of the Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP) receiving 406 votes.

This error was confirmed by the OEC, saying it was the electoral officer's fault.

The OEC will be investigating all electoral officers from polling booths where discrepancies were found.
