Marysulesa Tautunu has been awarded a fully funded scholarship to study in China, a dream that has come true after years of striving to further her education.

The 19-year-old shared that applying for the scholarship was inspired by financial struggles and the chance to gain international experience.

“Life in Samoa is kind of expensive, and during my high school and foundation years, I was striving to find sponsors to pay for my tuition fees. What inspired me most to apply for this scholarship is the fact that it is fully funded,” she said.

Although her first choices were New Zealand and Fiji, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to head to China. “Consider everything as a blessing and take it to gain more experience,” she added.

Marysulesa will pursue a Bachelor of Arts, beginning with one year of Chinese language studies before moving on to the final four years of her degree. She explained that she is still considering her major.

Initially, she had applied for Human Geography and Urban Rural Planning, but her experience working with the Office of the Electoral Commission (OEC) sparked a new interest.

“Gaining experience from the OEC and learning about democratic processes has motivated me to study politics and law. I will go for it and pray for God’s perfect plan,” she said.

Leaving Samoa for the first time comes with challenges, but she remains optimistic.

“Leaving Samoa for the very first time to pursue this dream isn’t easy, but I trust the process and God’s timing,” she shared. While her family expressed concerns about the distance and the length of study, they fully supported her decision to follow her goals.

She believes the scholarship will not only benefit her personal growth but also her community.

“It benefits me by learning the Chinese language, so it will be easier to understand Chinese characters on signboards, in restaurants, and in everyday life. It also gives me experience in travelling long distances. In the future, the advanced education I gain will help me contribute more to Samoa.”

Offering advice to other young people in Samoa, she encouraged them to stay positive and focused.

“Always trust the process and take the risk to gain experience. Don’t think of the negative side, but let the negatives strengthen you to go forth and pursue your dreams. Don’t let what others think stop you. Study smart and always be present in your academic work.”

She also acknowledged the Office of the Electoral Commission for the role it played in shaping her academic journey.

“I’ve learnt so much from them, their experiences and the path set for my academic life. I also acknowledge their hard work as they continue to work long hours to ensure integrity for Samoa’s Election 2025.”

Her story reflects determination, faith, and the courage to take opportunities despite challenges, setting an inspiring example for Samoa’s youth.
