For many young Samoans, turning 21 brings not only adulthood but also the right to vote. This year, first-time voters stepped into polling booths with both excitement and nerves as they made their voices heard for the very first time.

A 21-year-old girl from Vaisigano 2 District in Savai’i shared her experience. She admitted she was nervous as it was her first time voting.

“I felt worried because this is my first time casting my vote, and it was hard. But during that time, it was all well with the help of the police guiding me throughout, ticking the boxes and all that, in case my vote is disqualified,” she said.

“No, I did not ask my family for advice. I know in my heart who I’m going to vote for. And thank God it’s all done.”

A young man from A’ana Alofi 3 District also voted for the first time. He decided to seek advice from his family before casting his ballot.

“I was nervous too because I didn’t want to make a mistake. So, I asked my parents for advice. They explained the parties and the process. That helped me feel more confident when I finally cast my vote,” he said.

Finally, a 21-year-old girl from A’ana Alofi 2 District shared her first-time voting experience. She also sought advice from her family and felt proud to take part in the election.

“I was a little nervous and scared at first, you know, getting all the chills since it’s our first time voting, but talking to my family made me feel ready. I felt happy and proud when I cast my vote because I knew I was doing my part for the country. My advice to everyone is simple: just vote for a better Samoa, for the future of our families and our kids. Manuia le aso!” she said.

These first-time voters show that, whether seeking advice or following their heart, taking part in elections is an important step in shaping Samoa’s future.
