Trial deferred for Vaa and Maylyn Brown

The case involving defendants Vaa and Maylyn Brown, who are facing 253 charges, was set to proceed to a hearing on Monday but was adjourned due to a scheduling conflict with a separate Supreme Court matter.
The delay was caused by the unavailability of prosecutor Leone Su'a-Mailo, who is also leading another case currently before the Supreme Court.
The matter was brought before the District Court Judge, Alalatoa Rosella Viane Papalii, on Monday morning.
As Supreme Court proceedings take precedence over District Court matters, and Su'a-Mailo is unable to appear in both courts, the District Court hearing has been deferred. The case is now scheduled to resume on 4 August.
Iuni Sapolu has now been officially confirmed as counsel for the defence under legal aid.
The couple faces 253 charges with the possibility of additional charges on allegations of harassment using an electronic device, insulting words, and defamation against senior officers from the Ministry of Police. "The defendants are remanded on the same bail conditions, and this includes a strict bail condition prohibiting them from posting any adverse posts or publications online or any other medium," said Judge Alalatoa.
The defendants were vocal against senior police officers, including the Police Commissioner, over their handling of the unsolved death of Tu’uau Fa’asavalu in 2021.
They made allegations against the officials on a social media program they host called “Tu Manu ae le Tu Logologo”.
In one of their social media posts, the defendants alleged the Police Commissioner and other senior officers tried to cover up for a senior politician they claim is responsible for the death of the teenager.
