Samoa Ports Authority donates to epidemic

Samoa Ports Authority (S.P.A.) has pledged $100,000 to help Samoa during the measles crisis.

The S.P.A. Board Chairman, Tuiloma Neroni Slade presented a $100,000 cheque to the Chairman of the Disaster Advisory Committee, Ulu Bismarck Crawley.

The handover ceremony was held at S.P.A.’s headquarters at Matautu on Friday. 


Ulu acknowledged the assistance from the S.P.A. during the measles outbreak.

Tuiloma said that the donation is part of the S.P.A.’s contribution in lending a helping hand to the people of Samoa.

“The Board felt it was its responsibility just it is a responsibility of any other cooperative entity in the group of individuals who are as alarmed and as concerned about what’s happening to our country,” he said.

“This is an awful occurrence of a very serious medical problem and now it is a calamity that is affecting so many families and sectors of the communities and the whole country.

“We felt it was our responsibility to rally and to do what we can to be of assistance.”

He hopes the amount of money that has been donated will be used in critical areas.

“We believe that the strengthening of community capabilities issues of communications on the benefits of vaccinations.

“The absolute safety of these vaccines as we understand it poses no danger whatsoever it is a free medical service.

“I hope this amount of money will be used accordingly to improve and strengthen essential communications service, the preparations of families, village communities and the training of nurses. This is a nurse driven activity of the health services.

“It is an assistance we can afford to also help the Government.”
