Fa'asalele'aga No.2 apologises to PM, signs district funds

The Fa'asalele'aga No. 2 constituency offered its apology regarding the district council chairmanship saga to Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt and the cabinet on Tuesday morning before signing for the district grant.

A matai from Iva, Tofilau, apologised to La'aulialemalietoa, saying that the matter with rude remarks against him from one of Iva's matai was not lightly taken.

"Ua toe pu a le va'a o Ti'a ia Ti'a" (Ti'a boat has been damaged by Ti'a himself) said Tofilau, apologising to La'aulialemalietoa, saying that it was a matai from their village who made rude remarks against him.

He said this is a new beginning, and they are very happy to finally reconcile with the Prime Minister and move forward for the sake of the constituency.

The comments were made during a consultation at the Human Rights Protection Party office.

In responding, Prime Minister La'aulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt told the constituency that they don't have to apologise to him and the cabinet. He said all he wanted was to meet with the constituency and discuss all ways to move forward with the District Development Project.

"This is a new beginning, and let the death of our Lord Jesus Christ be a new era in the history of our relationship this morning," he said.

"We are so happy that this day has come and that we can meet, greet and discuss the development of the constituency moving forward."

The constituency presented fine mats as an apology to the Prime Minister, his Tofa and $1000.

Speaker Auapa'au Mulipola Aloitafua and the Deputy Prime Minister, Mulipola Anarosa Ale-Moolio, also received fine mats and $500 each.

All other cabinet ministers received fine mats and $300 each.

In return, the cabinet gave $10,000 as the constituency's fares to Savaii and an additional $5000, which was given to all orators present.

In concluding the meeting, district council chairman Magele Sekati Fiaui and two of the Fono Fa'avae members signed the $1.8 million fund for the constituency for the Back to School payout.

They were told to get two new accounts by the Prime Minister, one for the One Government Grant and the other for the development project.

Member of Parliament for Fa'asalele'aga No.2, Va'aelua Senetenari Samau, could not be reached for a comment as he is overseas.

The constituency had initially opposed the appointment of Magele as district chairman after he was found to have used $68,000 from district grants as election bribes. This followed a standoff between the Prime Minister and the constituency until an ultimatum was given. Faasaleleaga No.2 was told to accept Magele or not receive the district grant funds.

Last week, the constituency said it was taking the matter to court because depriving them of the district funds was unfair and illegal.
