Tuilagi brothers launch free rugby programme
A new free rugby skills programme aimed at young players was launched on Wednesday at Marist Primary School in Mulivai, drawing a large turnout of children eager to learn the game.
The Tuilagi Rugby Skills Academy, led by the Tuilagi family, hosted a free training session for boys and girls aged five to 13 at Marist Primary. The initiative focuses on building basic rugby skills while promoting discipline, confidence, and a love for the sport.
The programme is part of an effort to give back to the community by investing in grassroots rugby.

Tuilagi Anitele’a Tuilagi said the idea was inspired by similar academies already run overseas by his older brother, Freddie Tuilagi, in France and England.
“So that’s why we thought of launching one here in Samoa,” he said.
The academy is supported by a group of former players, coaches, and community leaders, including Marist Sports Club president Lemalu Lemisio, Taupau Alex Mikaele, and Alesana Manulaumea. Former Manu Samoa player Lolo Lui and Former Manu Samoa Coach, Mahonri Schwalger, also attended the session.
Tuilagi said the goal is to help young players develop early so they can reach higher levels in rugby.
“It’s important to invest in grassroots rugby to produce good players for our national teams,” he said.
Children taking part in the programme were taught basic skills such as passing, catching, and movement on the field, as well as the importance of discipline.

“We want to improve the skill levels of the kids so that they can reach the highest level of rugby,” he said.
Alesana Tuilagi said learning these skills at a young age is key to long-term success.
“If you want to be in Manu Samoa, you have to start from here,” he said. “That includes the basics such as stepping, passing, and game sense.”
He said the programme is focused on developing the next generation of rugby players in Samoa.
The free training sessions will continue on Thursday from 9 am to 10 am and on Friday from 3 pm to 5 pm.
