Samoa needs its jet planes, and the aim is to bring them within the next two years, said Minister of Finance Mulipola Anarosa Ale-Molioʻo, highlighting the government's key objective.

She made the comments on a talkback with the government media.

She said this was also one of the main points raised in the consultations across the 51 districts and Samoans living overseas.

“Their desire is clear: Samoa needs its own aeroplanes,” said the Minister of Finance.

“This reflects the long-term vision and planning of those involved. Within the next one to two years, we aim to establish a solid financial foundation that will enable us to plan and support these preparations for our aeroplanes effectively.

“The aim is to help preserve and grow people’s savings, particularly those held with UTOS.”

This was announced by Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa last week. He officially declared the opening of share registrations for those who wish to invest.

“These preparations are very important,” said Mulipola.

She said, “You must notify UTOS that your funds are specifically allocated to contribute to the airline, for their records.” She added, “For those who already have accounts with UTOS, there is no need to open a new account. Inform the office that you wish to register for airline shares, for their records.”

And that for those living overseas, the UTOS is currently preparing the system. Official overseas registration through the online platform is expected to open in February.

Mulipola said that there will also be an effort to provide monthly summaries of the funds collected for the airline.

“At present, under UTOS’s current system, you receive both dividends and interest. These dividends can be pooled together from UTOS profits and then officially distributed to contributors within UTOS,” said the Minister of Finance.
