Nineteen former scholars of Saint Mary’s Class of 1969 demonstrated unity and generosity by donating $11,000 to help complete the ongoing building construction at Saint Mary’s School.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Joyita Stanley-Slade said their inspiration was deeply rooted in gratitude and love for their school.

“There is a Samoan saying: ‘e le galo le alofa’. It is partly from gratitude for the lifetime friendships we’ve built, and the education and values instilled in us by the Sisters of SMSM,” she said.

She encouraged other classes and former students to support the school in any way they could.

“I guess to just say Saint Mary’s needs you. Let us join hands and give what we can to our school. Let us help in whatever way to improve the facilities to educate young women, the future leaders of Samoa,” she shared.

Joyita described the emotional impact of being part of the donation as both fulfilling and nostalgic.

“Contentment, blessed, but mostly gratitude that we have reconnected with our classmates from 57 years ago. Our memories are on full alert, remembering the fa‘aka pige, mapu, and all the games we played under the mango tree that is still there,” she said.

She also highlighted why it is important for former and current students to support causes like this.

“Do you mean ex-students or current? My response covers both. We are all part of the big picture. I again refer to another Samoan saying: ‘O Samoa ua uma na tofi.’ Everyone has a role. Whether a young child, young adult, or a parent, our roles are to an extent defined by our families, culture, or the social system. It is our responsibility to add value to our roles and lives. Do we want happy or meaningful lives?”

The donation will assist in covering the cost of materials and labour, helping move the construction project closer to completion.

School representatives expressed appreciation, acknowledging the commitment shown by the Class of 1969 and their lasting connection to Saint Mary’s after more than five decades.
