Ianeta Faaaliga Faamanatu was named the top Foundation Media and Journalism student at the National University of Samoa (NUS), receiving both a cash prize and a certificate for her outstanding achievement.

Speaking to the Samoa Observer on Friday, the 17-year-old said she was excited.

She said she was not expecting to be the top student, as she had only taken the course with hopes of passing, and never imagined she would achieve first place.

The young achiever expressed her happiness at seeing her family show up to her graduation in support, saying it meant a lot to her.

Originally from Aleipata, Ianeta is currently living in town for school. She is a former student of Aleipata College and said that the only thing she received in college was her completion certificate in Year 12.

This NUS award is the first recognition she has ever received for her work.

Her proud grandmother, although emotional, smiled the whole time as she told the Samoa Observer, “I feel very happy. Thank the Lord, as our prayers have been answered through their education and seeing them doing well.”

Looking ahead, Ianeta dreams of becoming a journalist or a businesswoman. She is the proud daughter of Faaliga Faamanatu and Failele.
