Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt says the Australian government has indicated it will provide up to $50 million over five years to support Lakapi Samoa, subject to the Samoan government having a role in how the funding is used.

Speaking at a press conference, Laaulialemalietoa said the proposed funding would be provided at $10 million a year and would come with conditions around government oversight.

“We are trying to put together the deal. We’ve already spoken to the Australian government,” the prime minister said.
