Police maintained a visible presence across the country over the weekend as excitement built ahead of Sunday’s Toa Samoa versus New Zealand rugby league match, which ended in a loss for Samoa.
In an interview with the Samoa Observer, Acting Police Commissioner Leiataua Samuelu Afamasaga said officers had been deployed to ensure safety as fans prepared to celebrate and show support for the national team.
“We know how passionate our people are whenever Toa Samoa plays,” Leiataua said. “Our main goal is to make sure everyone can celebrate responsibly and get home safely.”
He said the Samoa Police Service increased patrols from Friday evening, focusing on drink-driving enforcement, crowd control, and traffic management in Apia.
“We are making our presence known,” he said. “That visibility helps prevent accidents and keeps gatherings under control.”
Leiataua emphasised that the police presence was not meant to restrict celebrations but to ensure safety and public order throughout the weekend.
By Sunday evening, following Samoa’s defeat to New Zealand, police reported no major incidents across the islands. Officers remained on patrol through the night to monitor post-match gatherings and traffic.
Leiataua thanked the public for cooperating with officers and respecting the law during the busy weekend.
Despite the loss, fans continued to display their national colors and support for Toa Samoa, with police maintaining a steady presence to ensure the weekend ended peacefully.
