Cordelia's rewarding academic journey
For Law student Cordelia Narayan, returning to university life after years in the workforce has been a transformative and rewarding journey.
Cordelia had always been interested in law, but didn’t pursue it earlier due to shifting priorities. She was part of the students who graduated last month.
“Life happens, and your focus naturally changes to other evolving needs. When I started working in my current role as Senior Recoveries Officer, the passion for it slowly reignited.”
Cordelia acknowledges her former boss at Samoa National Provident Fund (SNPF); Sine Lafaialii-Koria, whose encouragement and support inspired her to pursue her current programme.
“She saw potential in me and encouraged me to pursue this path and continues to be not only a tremendous support throughout my journey but also a valued mentor,” she said.
With this law degree, Cordelia hopes to strengthen her expertise in her current line of work at the Samoa National Provident Fund.
Currently in her second year of pursuing a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), Cordelia is based at The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Samoa Campus.
She was recently awarded a full academic scholarship that allowed her to pursue her academic aspirations.
“Receiving this scholarship was a huge blessing; it has lifted a huge weight off my shoulders and allows me to focus on my studies, knowing that a major expense has been taken care of,” Cordelia said.
For her, the experience of studying at USP has been truly enriching, making Cordelia’s return to academic life after years in the workforce a rewarding and fulfilling transition.
“It’s a special environment where different cultures and perspectives meet, and that’s something I truly value,” she said.
“Going back to school after such a long time has definitely been an adjustment, but the support from the team at USP has made the transition so much smoother.”
“I’ve met fantastic people and I feel incredibly proud to be a part of this community.”
Cordelia credits USP’s Student Learning Support services for helping her rebuild her academic skills.
“The workshops have been a tremendous help, especially for someone like me who has returned to school after some years,” she said.
“I’ve learned so much about referencing and structuring essays, skills that are crucial for my success here.”
Despite the challenges of balancing family, work, and study, Cordelia is motivated by her children and the desire to be a role model.
“I want them to see that learning never stops and that you’re never too old to chase your dreams.”
Cordelia acknowledges her husband, Hari Junior Narayan, for his continuous support.
“I never would have had the courage to pursue this without his encouragement. He has taken so much on to lighten my load and ensure I have everything I need to keep going,” she said.
To other mature students thinking of returning to studies, Cordelia offers this advice: “Embrace your life and work experience as your strength.”
As she continues her studies, Cordelia Narayan stands as a testament to the power of lifelong learning and the impact of self-belief.
