Speaker loses seat in preliminary count

The Speaker of the House, Papalii Lio Masipau, is currently trailing in the preliminary count against the Human Rights Protection Party candidate, Namulauulu Papalii Leota Sami Leota.
HRPP’s Namulauulu has 692 votes compared to Papalii’s 464 votes in the constituency of Faasaleleaga 3.
In May this year, Papalii won the legal challenge pursued by the Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP), which claimed he was prohibited from casting a deliberative vote that allowed for the approval of the Constitution Amendment Act (CAA) 2025.
Papalii assumed the office of Speaker of the Parliament of Samoa on 24 May 2021. He is a lawyer and former Assistant Police Commissioner, first elected to Parliament in the 2011 general election as a candidate for the Tautua Samoa Party, and re-elected as a candidate for the FAST Party in the 2021 general election, representing the Faasaleleaga No. 3 constituency.
