451 ships cleared in 2024

The total number of international sea-going vessels cleared at the port of Apia in 2024 was 451, according to the Samoa Bureau of Statistics.

Of the total, 210 international sea-going vessels were accepted for tabulation, consisted of 141 container vessels, 39 general cargo vessels, and 30 mineral oil tankers. There were 241 vessels excluded from tabulation as they did not have the required information. These vessels included research, naval, yacht, cruise ships and fishing vessels.

The analysis of cargo discharged at the port of Apia indicated that, 167 vessels discharged a combined total of 348,458 metric tonnes of cargo, of which 46.4 per cent (161,809 metric tonnes) from Oceania (mostly from Fiji and New Zealand), 46.4 per cent (161,519 metric tonnes) came from the Asia region (mostly from Singapore) and 7.2 per cent (25,124 metric tonnes) from the America region.

A total of 93 vessels loaded a combined total of 45,272 metric tonnes of cargo, of which 60.4 per cent (27,347 metric tonnes) were loaded for the America region (all to USA), 23.7 per cent (10,735 metric tonnes) were loaded for the Oceania region (mostly to New Caledonia) 15.8 per cent (7,165 metric tonnes) were loaded for the Asia region (mostly to Taiwan), and the remaining 0.1 per cent (24 metric tonnes) was loaded to Europe.

 The 93 vessels that returned with outward cargo consisted of 67 container vessels and 26 general cargo vessels.

Data for the Shipping Statistics Report published by the Samoa Bureau of Statistics were collected mainly from Shipping Statistic Forms and cargo manifests, which were completed by Shipping agents and Stevedores as a port requirement for every international vessel. This report excludes all domestic services and the Apia-Pago Pago route.
