FAST airline to give share to overseas Samoans
The Fa'atuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi (FAST) Political Party has promised to bring an international carrier if voted into power, and Samoans residing overseas have been asked to donate $500 to have shares in the new plane.
Earlier, the Human Rights Protection Party announced their intention to upgrade the Samoa Airways fleet.
FAST chairman La'auli Leuatea Schmidt said this time it will not be owned by the government but the people of Samoa, especially those who reside overseas.
"These Samoans overseas, about 500,000, will all have a share to buy this new aeroplane," La'auli said.
"For instance, if each of them donates $500, there will be $250 million to buy a new aeroplane, and it maybe afford two," he said.
La'auli said the previous government, which was in power for 40 years, had failed to run Samoa's airline because the people were not included as shareholders.
"This will be your plane, you will be happy to fly and sit on a plane that you bought with your shares," La'auli explained.
La'auli said in the past years, the reason why Samoa failed to have its aeroplanes is because the government has been running it like it's own.
"For example, a rugby team want to fly overseas and seek the government's assistance to let them travel for free, that's why they failed," he said.
The FAST Party is planning to reveal their manifesto on 12 July.
