A heartfelt dream became reality on Friday as Seki Bro Ice Cream and Eats officially opened its doors in Fugalei, marking a proud moment for Tagaloa Afa Tiavo, his wife Lemalu Rasalama Tiavo, and their young daughter.

Tagaloa and his family decided to return permanently to Samoa earlier this year.   

What began as a personal passion has now grown into a community-focused small business with a mission to bring joy, opportunity, and a taste of nostalgia to locals.

“I still can’t believe it’s happening,” said Tagaloa  “Everything we planned has come to life. We just want to bring happiness to people — and we trust God’s timing for it all.”

The name Seki Bro reflects the couple’s blended identity, “Seki” for the Samoan flair and “Bro” for Afa’s New Zealand upbringing. The business offers nostalgic treats such as soft-serve ice cream with classic toppings like wafers and sprinkles, milkshakes, and fresh coconuts sourced directly from village suppliers, including their own families.

More than just a dessert shop, Seki Bro represents the family’s commitment to giving back. The business currently employs three local staff, all born and raised in Samoa, providing vital support as the main breadwinners for their families. One staff member, for example, supports eight siblings through her work.

“This is about more than just ice cream,” said Lemalu, who works in finance but supports the business alongside Afa. “It’s about supporting local families, offering opportunities, and doing something we truly care about.”

Having spent most of their lives overseas, with Lemalu originally from Samoa, educated in New Zealand, and working in Australia, the couple made the move back to Samoa in March to be closer to family, especially to care for Lemalu’s father. Their return has been both personal and purposeful.

“We hope that Seki Bro becomes a place where people feel welcome, enjoy good service, and create memories,” said Lemalu. “It’s a small start, but it means everything to us.”

With strong family support and a clear vision, Seki Bro Ice Cream and Eats is more than just a new business; it’s a celebration of culture, community, and a dream fulfilled.
