'Use your power wisely." This was a reminder to the 77 recruits of the Samoa Police, Prisons and Corrections Services (SPPCS), who took oath on Friday, 20 June 2025, at the Samoa District Court.

The group includes 27 female, 40 male police Constables, and 20 male Correction Officers. They took their oaths before Judge Mata’utia Raymond Schuster, who reminded them of the serious responsibility ahead.

“Being a police officer is not just a job; it is a commitment that carries a higher responsibility,” said Judge Schuster. “Use your power wisely to protect and serve our community.”

The 12-week training for police and prison officers was approved by the Samoa Qualifications Authority (SQA). Deputy Commissioner Leitaua Samuelu Afamasaga said only male prison officers were recruited this year due to the rise in prison escapes.

“My advice to the recruits is to always depend on God and carry out your responsibilities with honesty,” he said.

Leitaua acknowledged the support of all those involved in the training process and emphasised the importance of integrity in the line of duty.

New prison officer Kerisimasi Ned Keni, 24, shared his journey.

“I thank the Lord for this opportunity in my life. The biggest challenges I faced were adjusting to the early mornings—getting ready for work and then coming home after long days,” he said.

“This opportunity has changed my life. It allowed me to meet many people, earn a steady income for my family, and be part of something greater than myself.”

New Police Officer Ray Siaki from Aleisa also spoke on the tough road to this point.

“I thank the Lord for today and for the opportunity to be sworn in. Now we look forward to our graduation next week,” he said.

“There were moments I almost gave up, but I thank God I didn’t. The road was hard, but today makes it all worth it.”

The official graduation will be held on Friday, 4 July 2025, at the Samoa Police Academy in Tafaigata.
