New skills were acquired by the Samoa Police and Ministry of Fisheries staff with the help of the United States Coast Guard, which will come in handy when dealing with threats at sea.

The training included classroom sessions and hands-on exercises at sea, covering key topics such as boarding procedures, international maritime law, arrest protocols, high-risk searches, and handling non-compliant individuals. Participants came from the Samoa Police and Fisheries, working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard Mobile Training Team.

Fisheries Officer Jennifer Pasty Laulu said, “For this training, for me individually, it gives an idea of self-defence as well."

"The other thing about this training is the understanding of the US Coast Guard policy. At the end of it, it was challenging and fun at the same time.”

Corporal Michael Ualei of the Samoa Maritime Police said the training had a significant impact on officers tasked with protecting the country's Exclusive Economic Zone. He noted it helped expand their knowledge on safe boarding procedures and addressing illegal activities at sea.

He also thanked the US Coast Guard instructors for sharing their time and experience to support their learning.

Chief Ted Fox, one of four instructors, praised the Samoan students as sharp and quick learners. “This has been one of the most impressive trainings we’ve given,” he said. “We hope to return and continue this partnership.”

Seventeen students began the US Coast Guard training course in Samoa, with some departing early for other programs after meeting training requirements and receiving certificates.

Fourteen students completed the course, which included practical sea scenarios to test their skills without instructor support. This marked the first time the US Coast Guard has conducted training in Samoa.

The US  team also enjoyed local hospitality and culture, noting the beauty of the island and their visits to beaches and snorkelling spots.

The graduation is set for 21 June.
