Namulau’ulu Sami Leota, the Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP) candidate, is making another bid for the Fa’asaleleaga No.3 parliamentary seat in Samoa’s upcoming general elections.

A familiar figure in Samoan politics, Namulau’ulu previously held the seat in 2019 after winning a by-election following the passing of former MP Pa'u Sefo Pa’u. However, he lost the seat in the 2021 general election to Fa’atuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi (FAST) Party’s Papali’i Lio Masipa’u. Though he initially filed an election petition challenging the results, he later withdrew it, allowing Papali’i to retain the seat.

In an interview with the Samoa Observer, Namulau’ulu emphasised his strong ties to the constituency, citing his leadership roles as a matai (chief) in his home village of Sapapali’i and as President of the Sapapali’i Primary School’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA).

He highlighted key projects he initiated during his previous term, including the construction of a new school building, upgrades to the village pool, road improvements, and the establishment of a fisheries reserve.

He also addressed flood risks by overseeing the construction of a new bridge, a critical infrastructure need for the area.

Despite his track record, Namulau’ulu avoided making sweeping campaign promises, instead asking voters for the opportunity to serve the district to the best of his ability.

He expressed gratitude for the support he has received so far, acknowledging that the final decision rests with the people. “Voting is a person’s right and free will,” he said. “If they see me as the right person to represent them, then I humbly ask for their support.”

When asked about his rematch against FAST’s Papali’i, Namulau’ulu maintained a respectful tone, stating that he would accept the election results regardless of the outcome. “I respect Papali’i as an opponent. If he wins again, then so be it,” he said.

The upcoming election will test whether Namulau’ulu can regain his former seat or if Papali’i will continue to hold the constituency’s trust. With infrastructure and community development as key issues, voters in Fa’asaleleaga No.3 will soon decide which candidate best represents their interests in parliament.
