Former member of parliament Aeau Tima Leavai has confirmed her candidacy for the upcoming general election, expressing a deep sense of duty to continue her family’s legacy of service to the village of Falealupo.

Aeau, who was officially handed over by her village during a ceremony at the Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP) Headquarters in Pesēta on Wednesday, said she is both excited and motivated by the challenge ahead.

"I'm excited because it's a challenge, but at the same time, it's an avenue for an opportunity to serve my village, of course. And then afterwards, if I'm successful, I'll serve the government," she told the Samoa Observer.

Aeau had previously won a seat in Parliament, but withdrew soon after due to personal circumstances. “Yes, and I resigned. Some things that happened to my grandson affected me. And also, there was a petition, and then I thought it was just better to resign. So that's why I left.”

When asked what gives her the confidence to return to the political arena, Aeau responded, “Oh, because of my desire to continue serving. My father was MP for this village for 26 years, so I wanted to continue the legacy and to serve my village.”

Aeau is one of the few women contesting in the upcoming election. She acknowledged the presence of other female candidates, saying, “We’re looking forward to the race and as I said, I am looking forward to a successful outcome and a chance to serve.”

Reflecting on the significance of women stepping into leadership roles, Aeau shared a Samoan proverb: “E au le inailau a tamaitai” — a saying that highlights the strength and capability of women. “It speaks about the power of women and what they can achieve and do, not only as daughters, sisters, and mothers, but most importantly as leaders,” she said.

Her candidacy comes just weeks after the funeral of her late father, Aeau Dr. Peniamina Leavaise’eta, who was laid to rest at his home in Vini Fou. Aeau said his legacy is a driving force behind her renewed commitment to public service.
