Aiono resigns chases political ambition
The Director General of Health, Aiono Dr Alec Ekeroma, officially resigned from his post to contest for the upcoming general election in August.
In his official statement dated 16 June 2025, issued by the Ministry of Health stated he was intending to serve his three-year contract through December; however, the early announcement of the election has prompted an earlier departure.
"I would like to thank all individuals and organisations across the private, charitable and public sectors, both locally and overseas, who supported the Ministry's work during my tenure," Aiono stated.
"Your collaboration enabled us to protect and promote the health of our communities."
Aiono said he takes his hat off to all the hardworking staff of the Ministry of Health, from nurses to doctors and all support staff, for all the hard work they do for the people of Samoa.
"To all the nurses, doctors and support staff who serve with integrity, tirelessly and unselfishly- know that your work is valued, even when it is not always acknowledged. The feedback we receive from the public and media has led to many improvements in service delivery," Aiono added.
"And that is the essence of good governance."
Aiono assured that leaving the Ministry does not mean the unfinished work he planned will not be done.
Aiono said he has confidence in the capability of the Ministry's current and emerging leaders that they will continue completing and fulfilling the unfinished work he was not able to complete due to his early departure from the Ministry.
Aiono is now preparing for the general election in August, contesting under the Fa'atuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi (FAST) Party's umbrella from the A'ana Alofi No. 2 constituency.
He has joined the list of top public servants chasing an election seat.
Meanwhile, as part of his election campaign, Aiono has promised accessible, quality healthcare, stronger Education from early childhood onward, support for women and youth, a transparent government and jobs and Innovation.
