Fashion designer Afa Ah Loo shot dead in Utah
Renowned Samoan fashion designer, Arthur Folasa Ah Loo, well known as Afa Ah Loo, has been confirmed dead after he was shot at the "No Kings" protest in Salt Lake City on Saturday night.
This was confirmed by Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd in an interview with the media.
"Our victim was not the intended target but rather an innocent bystander participating in the demonstration," he said.
Redd said the victim, later identified as 39-year-old Clearfield resident Arthur Folasa Ah Loo, was shot by one of two individuals in neon vests who intervened when they saw someone move behind a wall along the route of the downtown procession and retrieve a rifle.
The men in vests confronted the suspect, who Redd said then raised the gun and ran toward the crowd.
One of those men fired a handgun three times at that rifle-carrying man, whom police called a suspect, hitting him and fatally striking Ah Loo.
The gunshots scattered the throngs of protesters, who by then had marched about a mile from Pioneer Park to the demonstration’s planned terminus at the Wallace F. Bennett Federal Building at 125 S. State St.
Redd said the vested men may have been part of the “event’s peacekeeping team.”
Officers detained these men but did not arrest them. They are not in custody, said Redd, adding that the shooter is cooperating with police.
The chief stated that the police did not fire any shots.
He offered his condolences to the family of the man killed and all others impacted.
“No one,” Redd said, “should fear coming to a demonstration, a peaceful lawful demonstration, in our city.”
Afa Ah Loo is recognized for his work in both local and international fashion scenes. He is known for his unique designs that often incorporate his Samoan heritage.
