The National University of Samoa received a total grant of approximately $104,350, which includes 10 water stations, 1,300 reusable water bottles and books from the United Kingdom International Development Programme.

The handover ceremony was held last Friday at the University, marking the successful completion of the project titled “Changing Mindsets: Removal of single-use Plastic in the National University of Samoa.”

The initiative has seen the installation of 10 water stations across the university and the distribution of 1,300 reusable water bottles. The project aims to provide students with access to free, cool, filtered drinking water, while also encouraging the reduction of single-use plastics through behavioural change among students and their immediate families.

As part of the ceremony, the Acting High Commissioner of the British High Commission, Daniel Garlick, also officially handed over a special donation of five books from Queen Camilla to the NUS library. The donation follows Her Majesty’s visit to the university during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting last year. Known as an avid reader and strong advocate for literature, Her Majesty sent the books through her initiative, The Duchess of Cornwall's Reading Room, to promote the power and benefits of reading.

Mr. Garlick highlighted the UK’s continued collaboration with the National University of Samoa and its commitment to environmental and educational development.

“We are proud of the UK’s ongoing collaboration with the National University of Samoa. A year ago, we were preparing for the visit of Their Majesties to NUS as part of CHOGM. Our project in partnership with Pure Pacific Water in providing water stations and reusable water bottles to NUS is ta angible example of how we can work together to change mindsets and protect the fragile environment in Samoa,” he added

“We hope that students at the NUS will be able to access and enjoy the books sent by Her Majesty the Queen. The books will foster a lifelong love of literature and connect students with that special magic that can only be found in the leaves of a book.”

Vice-Chancellor of the National University of Samoa, Tuifuisa’a Dr. Patila Malua Amosa, expressed her gratitude on behalf of the university.

“On behalf of the University, I extend our heartfelt gratitude for your generous donation of water stations and water bottles and also books to our university community, and that contribution is significant towards enhancing the learning environment and especially the well-being of our students,” she said.

“The books also will enrich our library resources, providing invaluable knowledge and fostering culture of learning and academic excellence."

The UK’s International Development Programme Fund supports community-based projects that benefit local populations and aim to address diverse needs. This project reflects the shared commitment of Samoa and the United Kingdom towards environmental sustainability, social progress, and educational development.
