HRPP announces ambitious election promise
The Human Rights Protection Party has become the first political party to make parts of its manifesto known, and in it is an ambitious poverty alleviation strategy that would cost $110 million annually.
While launching the initiative on Friday night, HRPP leader Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi said the focus is to alleviate poverty and restore integrity for Samoa.
"When HRPP did not win during the last election, what did I say in Parliament? Fiame, that's the government (Fiame le malo lena)," he said.
"Did we hand over the government like this? Did we hand over the government with doubt, division, poverty and high cost of living?
Tuilaepa said they handed over the government with their hearts that the Faatuatua ile Atua Samoa ua Tasi would lead the country to success.
"But instead, the people are crying out helplessly due to the very high cost of living and poverty," Tuilaepa said.
"Samoa was one of the Pacific Island countries that other Pacific islands looked up to, but now it's embarrassing to see the situation Samoa is facing.”
Tuilaepa said if they win the general election in August, they will urgently do everything to alleviate poverty in Samoa.
"We wanted to take away the people from a government that can't unite its people, a government that is now divided and has been putting the country in trouble and embarrassment," he added.
The poverty alleviation proposal is called the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA).
HRPP Deputy Leader, Lauofo Fonotoe Pierre said this project will help put people back on their feet and alleviate poverty.
Fonotoe said there will be cash grants of $500 for each family member annually.
"If your family has six members, that means they get $3000 every year. The same goes with a family of 10 people, they get $5000 every year from the COLA project.
"We believe in equal opportunity for all of Samoa, and no one is left behind," he added.
HRPP said they will release more details of their manifesto in coming days.
