Recent incidents of violence against Chinese nationals in Samoa have not impacted the local Chinese community, according to Ji Zhiming, President of the Samoa Chinese Business Inc. Association.

He said there was harmony and business ties with Samoans were strong.

“We are all brothers and sisters,” Zhiming said in an interview, adding that despite reports, the Chinese community has not felt threatened.

“During these times, we are good, and everything is okay.”

Zhiming noted that he has not received any complaints from members of the Chinese community and that operations across Chinese-owned businesses continue as usual.

“I hear my workers, Chinese people here, business people here, that everything is all good,” he said.

The Chinese Embassy in Samoa also responded to the recent unrest, expressing confidence in Samoan authorities.

“The Chinese embassy supports efforts of the Samoan authorities to maintain social order and is in confidence and trust that they can protect the legitimate rights of all people in Samoa, including Chinese community members,” the embassy said in a statement.

The embassy reaffirmed the long-standing relationship between the two communities: “Samoa is a beautiful and peaceful country where Chinese community members have been living in harmony with Samoan brothers and sisters for a long time.”

Zhiming, who has lived in Samoa for over 25 years, underscored his deep connection to the country. Now in his mid-50s with his children who were born in Samoa, Zhiming has plans on retiring here in the future.

“I love this country. I love Samoa so much,” he said.  Zhiming added that the recent incidents appeared isolated and short-lived, possibly linked to economic hardships affecting local youth.

“Maybe it's some young people, maybe their families are struggling. No job, low pay, and no money. It’s just a short-term problem,” he explained.

Reaffirming his belief in the strong relationship between communities, he added, “Everything is okay. We are all brothers. Everything is good.”

Zhiming expressed hope that people from all nations continue to view Samoa as a welcoming and peaceful destination.

“I welcome everyone, not just Chinese — people from all countries. I just hope they take time to understand Samoa,” he said.
