Concern for Safata No.2 MP crossing the floor

Dear Editor,

I write with deep concern regarding the recent decision by the Safata No. 2 constituency for its Member of Parliament to cross the floor and support the FAST Government without a by-election being called.

As a voter, I respect the role of our traditional leadership under fa’asamoa, and I acknowledge the authority and influence of the Matai in guiding village and district decisions. However, it is important to recognise that such a decision does not necessarily reflect the views of all constituents—particularly the youth.

In a modern democratic system, every citizen has the right to have their voice heard, and that voice is most clearly expressed through the ballot box. The absence of a by-election denies many of us—especially young voters—the opportunity to participate in a process that determines our representation in Parliament.

It is also concerning that there may be capable and willing candidates who are now unable to contest the seat due to this decision. Democracy thrives on choice, competition, and participation. Preventing a by-election limits these essential principles and risks silencing alternative voices within the constituency.

I strongly believe that the seat should be declared vacant, nominations reopened, and a by-election held. This would allow all eligible candidates to present themselves to the people, and for voters to decide who should represent them. Only through such a process can we ensure that the outcome truly reflects the will of the people.

Respect for tradition and the authority of Matai can coexist with democratic values, but one should not override the other—especially when it comes to representation in a national parliament.

Let the people decide. Let every voice count.

Yours sincerely,

Concerned Voter
