FAST ahead after provisional count

The Faʻatuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi (FAST) party has led in 28 of the 51 seats in the 2025 general elections after the end of the provisional count on Friday night.

FAST claimed 17 seats in Upolu and 11 in Savaii. The Human Rights Protection Party had 15 seats, the Samoa Uniting Party three and five independents have claimed victories after the provisional count. The special votes and pre-polling votes are yet to be counted and will be announced on Monday, 1 September.

HRPP leader Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi and SUP leader Fiame Naomi Mataafa claimed victories in Lepa and Lotofaga, respectively, despite some competition from FAST candidates.

The provisional results indicate that only two cabinet ministers won their seats. Fiame and Leatinuu Wayne Sooialo in Faleata No.2, who was uncontested after he won his election challenge. Others like, Faualo Harry Schuster, Toeolesulusulu Cedric Schuster, Lautimuia Uelee Vaai, Matamua Vasati Pulufana, Valasi Tafito Selesele, Olo Fiti Vaai, and Tuala Iosefo Ponifasio, all stumbled, some receiving very low votes.

Faleomavaega Titimaea Tafua secured SUP’s third seat in Aleipata Itupa I Lalo.

HRPP claimed 15 seats after the provisional count. Seasoned HRPP campaigners Tuilaepa, Lealailepupe Rimoni Aiafi, Loau Keneti Sio, and Lauofo Pierre Lauofo, are ahead in the provisional count and the outcome of the special counts may have very little effect on the final outcome.

HRPP also claimed seats in Savaii. In Faaseleleaga 2, Magele Tusigaigoa Simaika edged out FAST’s Magele Sekati Fiau. Papalii Lio Masipau was second to HRPP’s Papalii Sami Leota Sami.

FAST leader Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt, and Ale Vane Ale have garnered massive votes in their constituencies. Former health boss Aiono Dr Alec Ekeroma is among the first-time politicians with FAST who are ahead after the provisional count. All in all, FAST has 28 seats, and if the number remains after the official count and the challenges, that is enough to form a majority government.

The independents have pulled off big wins as well. Maau Siaosi Puepuemai in Vaa O Fonoti, Faalogo Kapiliele Faalogo in Siumu, Lealofi Lolopo Gafo in Palauli 1, Fiu Ponifasio Vase in Palauli 2 and Seve Henry Papalii in Vaisigano 2 won on provisional count.
