SOUTHAMPTON, England (AP) — England captain Eoin Morgan is expected to be ready for the start of the Cricket World Cup despite breaking a bone in his left index finger during training on Friday.

Morgan was taking part in catching drills during fielding practice ahead of England's warmup match against Australia in Southampton on Saturday when a ball hit him on the finger.

The left-handed batsman underwent a precautionary X-ray, which showed that he sustained a "small flake fracture," England said in a statement.

"He will not take part in the match (against Australia)," England said, "but is expected to make a full recovery and be available for England's opening ICC men's Cricket World Cup match against South Africa at The Oval on Thursday."

Joe Root was not with the England side on Friday because of personal reasons but is set to play against Australia. Leg-spinner Adil Rashid was likely to sit out the game as he manages a shoulder issue.
