Two biological brothers who are big fans of gold-medal winning Samoan weightlifter Don Opeloge have won medals for their respective colleges in the Inter-College Weightlifting Competition.

Faafetai Leiataua Faalaulau, 18, won the gold medal in the Super weight 109-plus kilograms while his 17-year-old brother Galuafi Leiataua Faalaulau also got gold in the 109 kilogram categories on Wednesday at the Samoa Weightlifting Federation Gym 2 at Tuanaimato.

Faafetai represented the Saint Joseph’s College while his younger sibling Galuafi competed for the Avele College.

In an interview with the Samoa Observer, both brothers said they were big fans of Opeloge and wanted to be like him.

"We come from Vaoala, and we have always dreamed of becoming a weightlifter and being a flag carrier for Samoa just like Don Opeloge,” said Faafetai.

“Seeing him here at the gym is really great and it also motivated us to do better and win these medals.”

The siblings were the last lifters, though Faafetai failed to lift his last attempt while Galuafi was able to nail it.

"It was a great feeling to compete with your own brother, we get to see where we both are at. Competing with him on that last attempt was really awesome, I knew that I had to beat my brother in that last attempt so I gave it my all,” added Galuafi smiling.

“When my brother didn't lift that last lift, and I was next, I felt like I had to win it and it was great to finally do it and end it well.”

The two brothers walked away with gold medals for their respective divisions with Galuafi getting gold in the 109 kilogram category while for Faafetai it was the super weight 109-plus  kilograms.

Faafetai and Galuafi are the sons of Muaau Maia and Faagase Leiataua Faalaulau and both dream of joining the Samoa weightlifting federation. T

They both vowed that they will continue their training in weightlifting as they have both shown a lot of potential in the one-day competition.
