Lemalu Tusi Pisi has accepted his calling as the head coach for Manu Samoa and now looks forward to the challenge ahead, the first one is the test against Scotland in New Zealand next month.

He mentioned that the selection process wasn't easy, but he applauded those who put up their hands up to play and serve Samoa through the blue jersey.

"We feel that we need some new blood from the team and also some younger players, not just for the next World Cup but also the World Cup after that. In terms of us moving forward, it's a little bit more than just about rugby at the moment," he said.

"Obviously, with the country going through what it's going through. I think putting some good performances together and uniting our people. It will help in terms of what's happening here in Samoa at the moment."

He has elected Tagaloa Theodore McFarland as captain, and he believes that he has what it takes to lead the team again. He did a fantastic job, and he wants a similar continuation as last year.

Having new and young players in the team would bring new tactics and enthusiasm to the team. But for Lemalu, it is moulding what they already have and what the new ones will bring in to ensure they put on a great performance.

The team will be training and camping in New Zealand. When asked whether Ardie Savea was considered, Lemalu responded that there was not much talk about Ardie, but he wishes there was.

Captain Tagaloa Theodore McFarland has accepted his calling to lead the Manu Samoa again ahead of their clash against Scotland. He is always proud to represent Samoa.

"As always, it is a huge honour and privilege. To captain, yes, but just being able to wear the jersey and represent Samoa at an international level, it is a huge honour. I'm thankful to coach Lemalu for putting his trust and faith in me and for selecting me to be part of this team again," he said.

Lemalu was also questioned on whether funding would be a problem for the team. He said that everyone is working hard, not just on the financial side of things, but on everything else. He was also queried on whether there is enough time for them to prepare for the upcoming match.

"I think for us going into camp, once we get into that first game, we need to put up a performance that everyone is proud of.

"To tell you the truth, it hasn't been any different from any other year, so there is no excuse there for us. We just have to make it as simple as possible and make sure they are all on the same page come their first game."

Manu Samoa is yet to qualify for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, a feat they have to accomplish in the Pacific Nations Cup this year.

Earlier on Tuesday, Lemalu announced his squad for the upcoming test match against Scotland and the Pacific Nations Cup. Making a return to the squad is former captain Michael Alaalatoa. A notable omission is Miracle Faiilagi, who has chosen to play in the National Provincial Championship. Melani Matavao and Tuna Tuitama, who have had a good Super Rugby season have been selected as well.

Faiilagi, Jonathan Taumatiene, Danny Toala, Lalomilo Lalomilo and Ereatari Enari were considered for selection but opted to play in the NPC.

Sama Malolo, Alamanda Motuga, Tumua Manu and Ulupano Junior Seuteni are injured.

The match against Scotland is on 19 July.
