Tennis claims 17th gold for Samoa

While the Pacific Mini Games in Vanuatu is into its second week, Team Samoa has collected 17 gold medals so far, but still remains in the fourth spot.

Chef De Mission Nynette Sass updated Samoa Observer yesterday of the team’s performance so far.

After an exciting first week with the Team Samoa Weightlifting performances, Team Samoa snatched another gold medal with tennis pair Lyla Tapusoa and Steffi Curruthers dominating in their final game.

Samoa was also fortunate to claim silver with their archery team.

“Team Samoa also claimed a silver medal from the archery with the Mixed Recurve competition.”

At Boxing, Samoa’s first two boxers, Nu’uuli Mose (69kg) and Ropati Su’a (75kg), won their first matches.

The other three boxers competed yesterday and their results are yet to be received.

Samoa Beach Volleyball team lost their first game on Monday afternoon. They won their second match against Kiribati 2-1 sets on Tuesday. 

They also won their game against New Caledonia with two sets win.

Another gold medal Samoa claimed earlier this week was from Donny Tuimaseve competing in the athletics field events javelin and also set a new record for Samoa.

“Donny was one of those athletes identified during the Youth Commonwealth Games that we hosted in 2015. He is currently under a scholarship since then.”

Samoan sprinter, Kelvin Masoe, also won Samoa a silver medal yesterday for the 100m finals. Kelvin Masoe was able to get the silver when the Fijian Sprinter was disqualified after a fault start matter.

Samoa’s Basketball team has so far won all their games played so far.

“Our men’s team has so far won all their seven round robin matches. Our women’s team lost their first two games on Monday. They won all three round robin matches yesterday.  

“We’re looking forward to more action today enroute to gold.”

Nynette also commented on Vanuatu’s hospitality.

“We are well taken care of. The food is excellent, transportation is excellent, the school that we’re housed at is clean and tidy and the volunteers are just so wonderful, cheerful and so accommodating.

“The overall mood of the team is positive and upbeat. We’re making all efforts to keep them well. Our physio is working hard with the team to ensure their recovery is handled well so they’re ready for the next lot of competition.”

Team Samoa has so far 17 Gold medals, 12 Silver medals and 5 Bronze medals with only a couple of days to go.
