Minister tightlipped on women quota activation
The Minister responsible for the Office of the Electoral Commission, Faualo Harry Schuster, is tightlipped over the activation of a constitutional provision that requires 10 per cent women representation in the parliament.
The Electoral Commissioner, Faimalomatumua Mathew Lemisio triggered the constitutional provision Article 44 (1A) on Monday night when he declared the appointment of six elected Members of Parliament from the by-elections as well as two women candidates. This is despite the 10-day window for defeated candidates to file electoral petitions still being open.
