More than 20 descendants of Pula Iosua and Esau in Salepoua'e were given the honour of receiving new matai titles last weekend.

Speaking to the Samoa Observer, senior matai Le'aupepe Fatu Pula said the reasons for these new matais were because of Pula Faimafili Tulaga and Pula Flora Wendt, who have agreed to let the new and younger descendants of the family get this opportunity to be proud new chiefs to serve the Sa Pula family.

"We decided this is a good opportunity to bring our family, especially our children, together and to know their roots," Le'aupepe said.

"Not all the time our family meet like this occasion, so it's a very rare opportunity."

The new matais have been bestowed the Teleitoa, Lealaifue, Faasaulevaiala and Vuga chiefly titles.

The others were given Malaeoaitu, Fonomaaitu and Masinaleatoa oratory titles.

Leaupepe said the bestowment of new matai titles to members of their family is also like a day for a reunion where they shared, laughed, and most of all, plan another gathering like this in the future.

All new title holders were reminded that these were not titles but a promise to be of service to the village.
