A Samoan woman national alleged to have dumped a baby in a trash bin in a restroom while on a study tour of Malaysia has been escorted back to the country. 

The woman arrived at the Faleolo International Airport on board an Air New Zealand flight on Wednesday afternoon accompanied by Samoa’s Consul General in Canberra, Australia.

The woman is now expected to face charges in a Samoan Court, having been released from Malaysian Police custody after being arrested when the baby was found near the Malaysian national monument. 

A senior Police Officer at the Dang Wangi District Police Head Offices in Kuala Lumpur told the Samoa Observer that they had released the woman last week. 

“She was detained here [at the Police station] for four days and we released her last week back to the Health programme that she came under," the source said. 

“She came under the Ministry of Health programme, so you should ask your Ministry there as we cannot release any other confidential information.” 

Contacted for a comment, the Ministry of Health’s Director General, Leausa Dr. Take Naseri, said he is unaware of the situation. 

“I have no information on the matter and I cannot speculate on anything. I just read about it in your paper and the details are with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs," Leausa said. 

According to sources at the Ministry, the woman is employed as a health officer at the Ministry and was on a work-related trip to Malaysia. 

A Malaysian newspaper, The Star, quoted a senior local police official she was in Malaysia for a health course.

“The woman arrived in Malaysia yesterday to attend a health course,” Dang Wangi District police chief ACP Mohd Fahmi Visunathan Abdullah was quoted as saying. 

"An inspection found that the baby still had its umbilical cord and was wrapped in a shawl inside the bin," he said to The Star Online.

"Investigations revealed that the woman had joined a group to the National Monument and stayed inside the toilet for more than an hour.”

It was not possible to get comments from the Police in Samoa.
