Australia’s Governor General, Sir Peter Cosgrove, was given a bat and delivered a ball for a strike much to the delight of young cricketers at the Tuanaimato Cricket Ovals on Saturday.

In Samoa for a brief visit, the Governor General attended the official opening of the U15 competition.

The children’s cricket match was funded by Australia through its Pacific Sports Partnerships Programme.

As part of his visit he also donated some equipment to the Chief Executive Officer of Samoa International Cricket Association, Salā Stella Vaea to help with the development of the sport at grassroots level.

Salā said the competition is derived from the Super Kids Super hit Programme last year.

“Now the kids are graduating to the next step which is going to be like a domestic competition that runs every Saturday,” she said.

“The launching today just coincides with the visit of the Governor General and part of the funding for this programme is from the Australian Government.

“We are very fortunate that the Governor General is also a cricketer. He loves cricket and so that’s why he’s been planning to be here this morning.

The competition will run for about seven weeks.
