I like to be my own boss
Being a stay-at-home parent is a full-time job, but it doesn’t pay a full-time paycheck.
This makes it difficult for some one-income families to earn enough money to pay for things they need, let alone grow any savings.
This is the opinion of Liva Atanoa of Siumu Sisifo.
But nevertheless, Liva aged 47, said he doesn’t want to find a job because he loves what he does.
“There are ways to earn money without leaving the house all day long to work for someone else or sacrificing your time with the kids,” he tells Village Voice.
“People have different views on things.
“We have different opportunities which enable you to make some cash while your children are at school or even while they’re home.”
He works hard in his plantation to provide for his family. He believes that if you are lazy then that’s how your life will be.
“Some say that life in Samoa is great while some say otherwise but to me personally, life is all up to each person’s decision.
“Many people in Samoa struggle to find job to earn a living, but look, we have our land to work on and we can be our own boss by planting taro.
“Life is simple, all we need to do is refer to our natural resources and work hard.
“Here I am on the road, I just got back from my plantation.
“This is my usual routine and I am used to it.”
The father of four went on to say that’s how life is for us Samoans.
“People shouldn’t be wasting time, do your best in whatever task you are given and continue to work hard.”
However the father finds it hard to do this when at the end of the day he has to find water.
“Life for me and my family is simple and fine but we kind of struggle without water.
“We do depend on the village well for water but for the future of my children we want our own taps but we don’t have them, because the only money we have is for our basic needs.”
Future plans for the next 3 years he says include extending his plantation.
“I want to be the number one farmer with the best plantation in Samoa.
“I will one day be the boss of a great plantation and I want to continue on without any doubt.“
