191 register as candidates

A total of 191 candidates, representing political parties and as independents, have officially registered to contest in the upcoming general election, according to the Office of the Electoral Commissioner (OEC).
Electoral Commissioner Tuiafelolo John Stanley confirmed the figure in an interview on Saturday afternoon, following the close of nominations at 12 pm on 12 July.
“As of right now, the team are currently going through it so that all the information they have is correct,” said Tuiafelolo. “Their matai names, constituencies and their villages.”
The nomination period opened on Monday, 7 July, and closed Saturday, 12 July at 12 pm.
The official list of nominated candidates is yet to be released. More details to follow.
