The medical fraternity in Samoa is mourning the death of Dr. Leota Faisopotele Lafotanoa Malaki Malaki.

The widely loved and respected doctor passed away on Tuesday morning at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital. He was 55.

Dr. Malaki hails from the village of Fasito’o-tai and lived with his family in Vaitele-fou.

His open hearted generosity and kindness touched many across Samoa. Dedication and commitment to his family shone through in all parts of his life.

At the age of twenty-nine, Dr. Malaki married, as he would describe her, his “beautiful wife” Luana Patosina Malaki.

He loved without restraint and often spoke with pride of his six children, two of whom are adopted. He thought constantly of what would be best for them, particularly their education.

Dr. Malaki placed great value of the content of a person’s soul and character and his own was certainly kind and generous.

Working long hours at his LMN Medical Clinic, the Tupua Tamasese Mea’ole Hospital and in communities, he treated hundreds of people in a week, many of whom would not otherwise be able to afford treatment.

A story-teller as well, he was not only generous with his expertise but his knowledge, sharing culture with those from all over the world and giving them a place in Samoa to call home.

His caring and kind character touched many in this world but nothing can compare to the love he showed for his family who held the highest place in his heart.

The details for his final services are being finalised.
