Former deacon cleared of drug charges
A former deacon of the Catholic Church, Wilson Simati, was cleared of all charges against him by the Supreme Court. He was charged with possession of marijuana and utensils.
Simati’s son, Mauuga Simati, pleaded guilty to the same charges. He is currently out on bail and will be sentenced on 4 May.
Wilson Simati's charges were withdrawn by the prosecution, saying that there was insufficient evidence to proceed.
Another drug suspect, Ilaita Tafili’s bail opposed by the prosecution on Monday because he has previous convictions for similar charges, and he was found with 42.8 grams of meth during a police raid on 22 December 2025 at Vaitele-Fou.
His counsel, Unasa Iuni Sapolu, had made the application for bail because the accused needs to provide for his family.
Tafili was remanded in custody, and the court adjourned the matter for a bail hearing on 30 April.
