The Samoa International Game Fishing Association has continued its annual support for elderly care in Samoa, donating $15,000 to Mapuifagalele Home for the Aged, a facility that says it relies heavily on community generosity to operate.

Speaking to Samoa Observer, SIGFA president Asiata Trevor Meredith said the association remains committed to giving back through yearly fundraising efforts and targeted donations.

“We always strive to donate to the home for the elderly every year,” Asiata said. “We hold fundraisers for the Cancer Society and ensure that a portion of our earnings is donated to the Cancer Society, while another portion goes to Mapuifagalele. We make sure to provide a donation to Mapuifagalele annually.”

At Mapuifagalele, which is operated by the Little Sisters of the Poor, staff say donations like SIGFA’s are essential for sustaining daily care and operations.

“We, the Little Sisters, depend on the support of the community,” one sister said. “This is how we receive the financial assistance needed, as well as goods that contribute to caring for the elderly here in Mapuifagalele.”

She added that support comes in many forms, including staffing assistance and community involvement.

“There is a lot to be done here, and the care we provide is supported by our staff, who assist us in our daily work,” she said. “Financially, we depend greatly on the help we receive.”

Sister Sera said the home is currently operating at full capacity, with all beds occupied.

“There are 43 beds in our home, and currently, we have 43 residents,” she said. “Our daily operations depend largely on the charity and generosity of the people. The residents range in age from 65 and above, with the eldest being in her 90s.”

She noted ongoing challenges, including staffing shortages, but said the home continues to function through faith and community support.

“At times, we face a shortage of staff. However, we remain protected and guided by God, who sees the many lives we are caring for,” she said. “We continue to maintain our home, both inside and outside, as it is quite a large property. We are truly grateful for the support of our benefactors, who help us sustain our work.”

She added that the home’s survival over the years has been made possible through consistent generosity.

“Since the opening of this home, we have continued to exist because of the generosity of the people of Samoa,” she said. “It truly is a miracle every day that what we need is always provided through our benefactors, our friends, and various associations, including International Game Fishing.”

The $15,000 donation underscores the continued partnership between community organisations and care providers, helping ensure that elderly residents at Mapuifagalele receive ongoing support and care.
