$1,100 each as Manawanui compensation
People of Safata No.1 and No.2 will receive $1100 each as compensation from the $10 million given as compensation by the New Zealand government for the sinking of HMNZS Manawanui.
The tragedy, which was later classified as human error, led to more than 200,000 litres of diesel being spilt into the ocean and damaged 50,000 square metres of reef. The environmental disaster led to a ban on fishing that lasted more than five months.
Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt confirmed that after the review, the special committee verified that each person, from babies to adults, should get $1100.
Laaulialemalietoa said the money should be paid to all households' accounts sometime at the end of this month.
He also revealed that negotiations for compensation for Siumu are currently progressing.
He said the cabinet agreed to give the $10 million to Safata as the first payment of this compensation.
Laaulialemalietoa said there will be future negotiations with the New Zealand government on the future of the Manawanui, which lies 30 metres below sea level off the coast of Tafitoala.
$100,000 from the $10 million will be given to all businesses in Safata that were affected.
