A blocked drain in Vaitele is causing flooding around a shop at the junction of the main highway whenever there is a heavy downpour.
The shop's parking area also serves as a taxi base for the Supa Kako Taxis. The shop, which is located next to Frankie in Vaitele, is also used by workers from the industrial area to catch buses.
The frequent flooding is causing inconvenience to taxi drivers, shop owners, and pedestrians who regularly use the area.
“This place always floods when it rains heavily,” said Sione, a taxi driver. “We park here every day, but after rain, the water just sits. It smells bad and makes it hard for us to work.”
Tina Onosa'i, a worker from CCK, which is metres away from the shop, said the drains appear either blocked or too small to handle the volume of water brought by heavy rain. Rubbish, mud, and debris were seen trapped in the drains, preventing water from flowing properly.
The flooded area has also become a concern for public health as stagnant water can attract mosquitoes.
With the rainy season bringing heavier and more frequent downpours, residents and workers are urging authorities to inspect and improve the drainage system in this part of Vaitele. They are calling for immediate clearing of blocked drains and long-term solutions to prevent repeated flooding.
For the taxi drivers and nearby businesses, proper drainage is essential not only for convenience but also for safety, health, and maintaining normal daily activities in the area.
