A major in Chinese and full on health science bachelor's degree is among the five newly introduced programmes at the National University of Samoa (NUS), Vice Chancellor Tuifuisaa Patila Amosa confirmed.
Minister of Education Aiono Alec Ekeroma highlighted the expanded opportunities at NUS, which now include a Diploma in Sport Science,
Certificate IV in Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management, Diploma in Art (Secondary Teaching), Chinese Language Major in the Bachelor of Arts and a full Bachelor of Health Science.
In addition, NUS has revived two key teacher training programmes, the Diploma in Education (Primary) and the Bachelor of Education (Secondary).
“These are critical steps in addressing our teacher workforce needs, supporting health sector capacity, building expertise in climate resilience, and broadening skills in sport, language, and the arts,” Aiono said.
Aiono also emphasised that university is not the only path to success. For students who scored below 200 in the Samoa Secondary Leaving Certificate (SSLC), vocational and technical fields provide alternative pathways.
“You can become a skilled professional, business owner, or entrepreneur through vocational training. Samoa needs electricians, plumbers, mechanics, builders, hospitality workers, and ICT technicians just as much as degree graduates,” he said.
Tuifuisaa said enrolment is underway this week, and students are encouraged to secure their places.
When asked about rural student housing concerns, the NUS chancellor declined to comment, citing a busy schedule.
