Officer with 30 years of service suspended
The bodyguard of former Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata'afa, Nanai Vani Vai, is one of the police officers suspended for allegedly leaking information about drug raids to suspected criminals and is now under investigation.
Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa made the announcement on Monday afternoon but did not identify the two police officers who were suspended.
Nanai is also the Second in Command of the Tactical Operation Squad (TOS). His suspension came into effect on Tuesday morning after the acting Police Commissioner Leiataua Samuelu Afamasaga was directed to do so.
In a post on Facebook, Nanai said he was not going to say much about the decision and will await the investigations conducted by the Professional Standards Unit of the Ministry of Police.
Inspector Nanai has been serving the Ministry of Police for 32 years and has been with TOS for over 20 years.
He is accused of leaking a search warrant to some drug dealers before the police raided their houses.
La'aulialemalietoa revealed that the identities of those suspended will be revealed next week.
La'aulialemalietoa also mentioned that he would direct the police to name and shame the police officers as it is being done to drug suspects.
