Concern over the involvement of children in drugs in Samoa has inspired 59-year-old author Vaoese Limutau Kava to write a new children’s book aimed at guiding young minds toward positive choices.
Titled "Tama Poto Say No to Drugs", the book is written in Samoan and English and encourages children to embrace good habits, strong values, and safe, healthy activities.
“The recent news about our children being drawn into selling drugs has deeply saddened me,” Vaoese said. “This reality inspired me to write a book that shines a light on hope, resilience, and the positive paths we can guide our children toward.”
The title Tama Poto is inspired by a well-known Samoan saying: “Ole tama poto e fiafia ai le tamã” (“A smart son makes a father happy ”). Vaoese adapted this familiar phrase to create a story title.

The 24-page book is designed for young readers from five years old up to high school students. Through simple language, cartoon illustrations, and weekly activities such as visiting grandparents or helping in plantations, it teaches children to occupy their time productively and make positive choices.
Vaoese explained, “The book is about how kids can spend their time during the week. At the end, it encourages them to say no to alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs.”
She said it is like teaching children to say no to strangers—it may seem small, but it is an important step to help them stay strong and avoid these dangers.
While she avoids mentioning specific drugs, Vaoese emphasised the importance of children understanding the risks without being unnecessarily exposed. “I don’t even want to mention the word drugs near my children and grandchildren,” she said. “It’s not a rule, but something inside me.”
Vaoese has a long history of involvement with children’s literacy. She runs a reading program in Samoa for children aged five and up, helping them read, decode, and pronounce words. She is also a grandmother, which inspires her commitment to educating the next generation.
This new book marks her 11th publication since she began her writing journey in 2019. The cover of the book features a photo from her reading program, while the interior is filled with engaging cartoon illustrations designed for young readers.
Originally from the villages of Fagaloa, Vaoese is married to Tongan Samuelu Kava. She has five children, including four sons and one daughter, and five grandchildren. Although most of her children live overseas, she also cares for foster children in Samoa. She also serves as Executive Officer at Vaa o Fonoti District Council in Samoa.
Vaoese holds a National Business Administration degree from the Australia Business Institute and a diploma in business from Adelaide, Australia. She has spent much of her life living overseas, yet remains deeply connected to her Samoan roots and is committed to making a meaningful difference in her community.
The book is expected to be printed and released soon. Vaoese hopes that it will not only inspire children to make positive choices but also encourage parents to actively engage with their children through reading and learning.
“Through writing and reading, parents can guide their children,” she said. “We can all work together to protect and empower our children.”
